BALEVI, Nessim
1922 – 2017
It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of Nessim Balevi at Hôpital de Notre-Dame-de-la-Merci, on Sunday, April 16, 2017, at almost ninety-five years of age. Beloved husband of Solly Benba Balevi for sixty-three years. Remarkable father to Haya and Hanan Itescu, Marc and Joe, Havva, Ben and Susan, Esther, and Ariel. A spirited Papou of Kailyn, Johannah and Timo, Alix and Paul, Naomi, Nathanael, Tara and Greg, and Joshua. In pursuit of raising a family in a place with far more opportunity than the one he left, Nessim came to Canada in 1957 – a decision he considered his best – with his wife, two young children and an infant. This was followed by the birth of three Canadian-born children. Nessim's highly analytical abilities allowed him to be selected from thousands of applying students for entry into university for an engineering degree. This allowed him to become a civil engineer, a profession he enjoyed immensely, and one in which he was highly regarded. He concluded that career in his later years as a professor, educating future engineers in concrete construction – his greatest expertise. Nessim's favoured hobby was mathematics, being his joy in his youth of limited means. Many of his children remember being taught algebra and regression analysis far before their peers at elementary and high school. A great storyteller, who could converse in eight languages, five fluently. Nessim was also a history buff who could easily challenge many historians over the world events of the last ten centuries. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends, and will be forever in our hearts. Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W., on Wednesday, April 19 at 11:30 a.m. Burial at the Shaare Zion Congregation Section, Eternal Gardens, Beaconsfield. Shiva strictly private. Contributions in his memory may be made to Gracia Foundation – Hôpital de Notre Dame de la Merci, (514) 331-3025 ext.: 71940. |
