| Obituary | ALBERT LOUIS STEIN Q.C. (A.L.) In Montreal on Wednesday, June 6, 2001. He was a prominent lawyer and community member. He served as president of Elm Ridge Golf and Country Club, and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Shaare Zion Synagogue. He was attorney of record in the landmark civil liberties case of Roncarelli vs. Duplessis. The Bar of Montreal honored him with its medal on September 4, 1997. At that time the Bar stated that it had the great honour of counting among its members a lawyer who fought for a fundamental right, the freedom to practice the religion of one's choice, against the most powerful forces that this province could muster; not only did he fight, but he won. The case of Roncarelli vs. Duplessis remains to this day a cornerstone of our jurisprudence. He is survived by his beloved wife Eleanor Speisman, his loving children Alan (Barbara), Michael (Janice), David (Myrna), and Karen (Bobby), his cherished grandchildren Stephanie, Kim, Lori, Alison, Julia, Isaac, Jonathan, Daniel and Gabriel. Dear brother and brother-in-law of Kate Freeman (the late Irving), Samuel (Rita). Funeral service from Paperman and Sons, 3888 Jean Talon W., Montreal on Friday, June 8 at 9:45 a.m. Burial at the Shaare Zion Congregation Section, Eternal Gardens Cemetery.
