Obituary LORRAINE LIGHTSTONE (nee PEDVIS) Lorraine passed away on Friday, May 27, at the Montreal General Hospital, after a brief battle with liver cancer, at the age of eighty-one. Born Lisa Pedvis on January 20, 1930, in Quebec City, she was predeceased by her father, Norman Pedvis, and mother, Annie (nee Roback). A graduate of Sir George Williams College (now Concordia University) in Montreal, Lorraine was a stay-at-home parent who attended to her family and did volunteer work. She's survived by her loving brother, Berel Pedvis (Joyce) of Montreal, sons Lyon of Ottawa and Michael of Halifax, and by grandchildren, Adrian, Nicola, Samantha, Jesse and Kate. Lorraine was a mother-in-law to Karen, Mike's wife, and sister-in-law of the late Eleanor Pevis. Lorraine is remembered fondly by other relatives, and will be missed by friends and staff at her recent homes in the Manoir Montefiore and Place Kensington. The family would like to say a sincere thank-you to the medical personnel who looked after our mom, and to Estella and Patsy, her caring friends and former helpers, for their assistance and gentle understanding. Many thanks, too, to Marvin and Dorothy Riback of Montreal for their loyal friendship, love and good deeds as the decades marched on. Your acts of kindness helped mom immeasurably. Lorraine was a good soul. She was sensitive, open-minded and had a social conscience. She liked the good life but had a soft spot for the underdog. When younger, Lorraine volunteered for a while at a local seniors' home, an elementary school and at the Jewish General Hospital. She was also a supporter of charitable causes and the arts, and in the early 1970s was one of the few middle-aged parents hip to the Latin sound of Carlos Santana. Late in life Lorraine suffered from symptoms of Parkinson's, and had to manage heart trouble, chronic back pain and other health issues. At age seventy-six, she surprised her family by finally kicking a decades-long nicotine habit, proving you're never too old to stop smoking. She reveled in her role as a grandmother and unconditionally loved her children and grandchildren, who remember Lorraine's unique presents that were always given with the best of intentions. She was very interested in the exploits of her kids and their families, and was always happy to hear from them or be visited by them. A family dinner at a restaurant in Montreal's Outremont district in January 2010, in honour of her 80th, was full of laughter and love. Lorraine loved her family, and we loved her. Rest in peace, mom be free. Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W., on Sunday, May 29 at 2 p.m. Burial at the Memorial Park Cemetery, de la Savane. Donations in Lorraine's memory may be made to the Canadian Mental Health Association, (613) 745-7750 ext.: 224, or charity of your choice.
