Obituary CARIN, Reuben (Ruby) On Monday, April 12, 2010, in his ninety-second year. Beloved Dad of Barry (Anne), David (Brenda), Michael (Cielo), and Andrew. Husband of the late Bess. Adored Zaida of Kristi (Kyle), Laura (Will), David, and Alicia. Great-grandfather of Lola. Born Reuben Karasinsky, he was the youngest child of the late Anne (Deskin) and the late Barnett Karasinsky. He was the brother of the late Bill (Leah), the late Mike (Nellie), the late Alex (Esther), the late Joe (Gayle), and the late Morrie. Brother-in-law of Ben Dobrinsky (the late Sarah), Mel Dobrin (Mitzi), the late Herb Dobrin (the late Anne; Sybil), the late Ida Julius (the late Sam), and the late Toby Dobrin. Reuben served in the RCAF from 1941 to 1945. His love of country was something fierce, surpassed in intensity only by the pride he took in his four sons. He attended Baron Byng High School, where he was a member of the city champion basketball team and captain of the soccer team. He made a name as a boxer at the YMHA. Reuben was a strong promoter of education and took tremendous satisfaction from the fact that all his sons were McGill graduates. He was a citizen activist and lifelong athlete. Well into his eighties, he walked Mount Royal, golfed, and skied. During his sixties and seventies he attended Concordia University for thirteen years, taking courses in political science and philosophy. He will be remembered most for the infinite zeal he brought to parenthood, his respect for tradition, his advocacy of Jewish causes, his fiery political views, inexhaustible letter-writing, physical resilience and sheer toughness. He was a fighter, a Canadian, a mensch. Ruby will be missed by his many nieces and nephews, family and friends. Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W., on Wednesday, April 14 at 11 a.m. Burial at the King George New Cemetery, de la Savane. Contributions in Reuben's memory may be made to the Jewish General Hospital Foundation, (514) 340-8251, or visit www.jghfoundation.org .
