It is with deep sadness that Saul's family announces his death at age 84 in Ottawa on April 24, 2002, after a brief illness. Saul was the beloved husband of the late Freda Frankel, with whom he shared 58 years. Father to Deborah, Daniel and Naomi, and Zaidie to Simon and Aaron. Brother to the late Oscar (Toby) and to Rubin (Ellen) and Lily Shatsky (Bunny). Also survived by sisters-in-law Frances Shurman and Sonya Schneyer and by many nephews and nieces. A multitude of friends and colleagues join with the family in mourning his passing. Born in the St. Urbain area of Montreal in 1917 to Rifka and Moses, Saul lived a life of thought and integrity guided by a very big heart. After serving in the military during World War two, he attended McGill Univesity, where he earned a Bachelors, Masters and finally a Doctorate in Political Science. He moved on to a distinguished career as a professor at McGill and later as Dean of Social Sciences at McMaster University in Hamilton. In 1976 Saul and Freda moved to Ottawa, where Saul embarked on a second career as an adjudicator with the Public Services Staff Relations Board. Following his retirement from the Board, Saul continued to work as a freelance labour arbitrator. He was working right up until his death. Philosopher, humanist, thinker and very loving family man, Saul will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.
