DON BOYANER, BSc. MDCM, FRCS (C) After a most courageous battle with cancer, on Tuesday June 10, 2008. An early pioneer in lens implant surgery in Canada, Dr.Don Boyaner traveled extensively throughout Canada, Europe, the U.S.A. and Australia teaching new implant techniques, thus leaving an indelible imprint upon the practice and teaching of ophthalmologic surgery. Don Boyaner was born in Saint John, New Brunswick on March 29, 1927, the son of Ester and Eli Boyaner. During his formative years in Saint John, he was active as a Boy Scout, following the example set by his father who was, for many years, Commissioner of Scouting on the World Council. The excellent character-building guidelines of that organization were reflected in his way of life and his teachings to his own children. He is deeply mourned by his beloved wife, Evelyn Naimer, with whom he enjoyed an extremely happy marriage for 57 years, his children, Frank (Ottawa), Lee, Marlene and Rob Hulem (Richmond, Va.) whom he adored and respected for their individual achievements, and his grandchildren, Laura Boyaner, Jamie and Kevin Hulem, the lights of his life who treasured every moment spent with him. Predeceased by his dear sister, Shirley Lipsett Segal, he is survived by his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Gerald M. and Yvette Naimer, Gordon Naimer, Dulcie Naimer, and by his nieces, nephews, many grand-nieces, grand-nephews, a wide circle of friends, countless grateful patients and professional colleagues. He earned his B.Sc. degree at the University of New Brunswick in 1947, graduated from the McGill University Faculty of Medicine in 1951 and went on to New York University Post-Graduate Medical School where he trained in ophthalmology at Bellevue, University and St.Vincent's Hospitals. He was a Diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology. He returned to Montreal in 1955, joined the staff of the Jewish General Hospital where he taught ophthalmologic surgery and continued his career at McGill University as an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology. His professional affiliation with the Jewish General Hospital spanned over 50 years. He took pride in the achievements of the residents he taught, and derived great pleasure from the close relationships he maintained with so many of them to this day. When he retired, a Jewish General Hospital-McGill University lectureship was established in his name in recognition of his skills as a teacher. Dr. Don Boyaner was a talented photographer, a skilled carpenter, loved fishing and was an avid golfer. He was a founding member of the Green Valley Golf and Country Club, and, more recently, a member of the Hillsdale Golf and Country Club. The Boyaner family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to the Jewish General Hospital's Dr. Martin Black, Chief of Head and Neck Surgery and his team and especially to the Palliative Care doctors - Dr. Meredith Deutsch-Levy and Dr. Nicole Baird, for their highly skilled care and compassion. Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon W. on Thursday, June 12 at 12 noon. Burial at the Tifereth Beth David Jerusalem Congregation Cemetery, de la Savane. The family will be receiving visitors at home from 2 to 4 p.m. & 7 to 9 p.m. through Sunday evening June 15. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the "Dr. Don Boyaner Memorial Fund for Head and Neck Oncology/Otolaryngology Research" c/o The JGH Foundation, (514)340-8251. |
