Obituary Professor Emeritus Albert Stanley Bregman died peacefully on May 18th after a lengthy illness. Born in Toronto on September 15th, 1936, to Harry and Mary (nee Abel), Al studied at the University of Toronto, Yale (PhD 1963) and Harvard, where he researched human memory. In 1965 he joined the Psychology Department at McGill University in Montreal, where he spent his entire career. His work centered on the fields of experimental psychology and cognitive science. He is best known for having developed the field of auditory scene analysis in his 1990 book, Auditory Scene Analysis: the Perceptual Organization of Sound.

Dr Bregman received a number of accolades and awards in his lifetime, including elections as a Fellow to the Canadian Psychological Association, the American Psychological Association and the Royal Society of Canada. In 1995, he was awarded the Jacques Rousseau Medal for interdisciplinary contributions by the Association francophone pour le savoir. In 2004, he received the CPA Donald O. Hebb Award for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology as a Science, and in 2012, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Despite his many accomplishments, he is remembered and loved by all as a kind, humourous and modest man. His trademark suspenders and shorts indicated that he was someone who did not take himself too seriously. His hobbies included birdwatching and playing the harmonica, and he always enjoyed being with friends and family, endlessly debating the meaning of life!

Mourning his passing are his beloved wife of 47 years, Abigail Sibley, his stepchildren Sylvia (Steve Robinson); Francoise (Chris Lyons); Michel, Patrick (Elizabeth Nalsen), and Eileen (Mike Mouland). He also leaves behind his loving grandchildren Christopher (Katie), Alex (Torie), and Daniel Morin; Thomas and Kathryn Robinson; Emily Morin-Lyons (Michael Scioli); and Benjamin and Christopher Mouland, and great-grandchildren Oliver, Emery Jo, and Elliot. Left to grieve are his sister Marcia (Joel Schechter) in Jerusalem, his nephews Eric and Borach, his devoted cousin Jack Silverstone and many other family members, friends, colleagues and former students.

The family wishes to thank the Maimonides' 5th floor South team, especially Megan and Willington. We are so grateful for the excellent and compassionate care he received.
