Comments/Notes Founding Cantor Shaare Zedek Congregation
Obituary Cantor Mendel Fogel It is with a profound sense of loss that we announce the passing of Ha'Chazzan Mendel Fogel, founding Cantor of Congregation Shaare Zedek, on Saturday, September 22, 2012. His soul returned to its Maker towards the conclusion of Shabbat Shuva - the Sabbath of Repentance. Mendel Fogel was associated with Shaare Zedek Congregation for nearly six decades. Beloved husband of Frances Koffler for fifty-nine years. Devoted father and father-in-law of Rochel and Ephraim English, Paula and Barry Trink, Shimon and Esti Fogel, and Samuel Fogel. Cherished Zaidy of Shayna and Jeremy Horowitz, David and Rena English, Eli English, Orly and Shlomo Glowitz, Max, Moshe and Talya English; Ariel, Eliana, Yaron, Lior, Keren and Amichai Trink; Rochel-Leah and Moishele Fogel; Ne'ema, Rivka and the late Netanel Fogel. As a survivor of the Holocaust, his greatest triumph was the true "yiddishe naches" derived from his seventeen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Predeceased by his siblings, Naftali, Moshe, Miriam and Yosef Mayer. Dear brother-in-law of Terry and Joe Sonnenschein. Frances and the children would like to acknowledge with deep gratitude the extraordinary kindness and support extended by the entire Shaare Zedek Congregation Family, as well as the unstinting assistance and caring demonstrated by the Paperman family - with whom Cantor Fogel enjoyed an abiding and very close relationship. Words cannot adequately convey the appreciation felt for Myer Bick and the staff of the Jewish General Hospital for their compassion, sensitivity and quality of care. Funeral service on Monday, September 24 at 12 noon, at the Shaare Zedek Congregation, 5305 Rosedale Ave., Montreal. Burial at the Shaare Zedek Congregation Section, Eternal Gardens Cemetery, Beaconsfield. Shiva will take place in the Davine Hall at Shaare Zedek Congregation. Mincha and Ma'ariv on Monday at 6:30 p.m., Shachris on Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. Due to the onset of Yom Kippur, shiva ends Tuesday, September 25 at 2 p.m. Reflecting his love for the Jewish people and the Jewish state, contributions in his memory may be made to Congregation Shaare Zedek, (514) 484-1122, www.shaarezedek.ca, or to Vaad Lema'an Ha'Chayal.
