Obituary NORMAN SPECTOR It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Norman Spector on October 20th, 2010 peacefully and surrounded by his family. Devoted husband to Selma and respected father of Ivan (Jodi), Chuck (Heidi) and Lisa. Dear Papa to Shane, Amber, Shelby, Brett, Samantha, Scott and Tiffany. Born in New York, Norman led a diverse and significant career. He joined the US Army going overseas as part of the American occupation forces in Europe and worked with the United Nations Refugee Organization helping thousands of homeless and displaced Jews. Returning to Montreal, while attending McGill University, he became involved in the oil business eventually taking the position of President of S. Albert Oil. Norman was also an early pioneer in the energy conservation business. Renewable and alternative energy were a passion for Norman which led him to commission an award-winning prototype electric car as early as the mid 1970's. Norman also co-authored the book "Man and His Home" and, following its publication, he continued to advise homeowners through his weekly column in local newspapers. Norman was also an early investor in countless businesses where he was guided by his belief of investing in people in order to help them succeed. Norman's dedication to Jewish community causes led him to serve as General Chairman of the Montreal Combined Jewish Appeal, Chairman of Israel Bonds and President of the Beth Zion Synagogue. Norman is remembered as a generous man who treated all people with respect and dignity, helping those in need. His great passion for sports, particularly skiing in Stowe, is a legacy he passed down to his children and grandchildren. It wasn't too long ago that Norman could be seen biking up the Notch and then going down at full speed. He had a great appreciation for life and the outdoors which he loved to share with his family and friends. Sincere thanks to the caregivers, Nina, Donna and Tania, who brought comfort to Norman in his final days. Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W, on Friday, October 22 at 11 a.m. Burial at the Beth Zion Congregation Section, Eternal Gardens Cemetery, Beaconsfield. Shiva to take place at his home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Contributions in Norman's memory may be made to the "Norman and Selma Spector Endowment Fund" c/o the Jewish Community Foundation, (514) 345-2645 ext: 3305.
