Obituary | It is with heavy hearts that the family of Margaret Zoldan announces her peaceful passing on Sunday, September 25, 2022, in her one hundred and first year. Faithful and loving wife of the late Moritz Zoldan, who died in 2003 after fifty-seven years of marriage. Beloved mother and mother-in-law of Fred and Annick Zoldan, Harry and Pauline Zoldan, Rita Zoldan and Joel Seltzer. Cherished ‘Babi’ of Jesse and Tony Blauer, Audra and Marc Joseph, Aaron Zoldan and Leslie Zylbering, Benjamin and Tiffany Zoldan, Emily Zoldan and Sofyen Ben Amara. Margaret was a proud ‘Babi’ of thirteen great-grandchildren: Nicholas, Madison and Olivia Blauer; Ryan, Mason, Jake and Lola Joseph; Sloan and Harley Zoldan; Kenza and Yemaya Zoldan; Noah and Eden Ben Amara.
A hairdresser by trade, Margaret was twenty-two when she, her parents and grandparents were taken to Auschwitz in 1944, during the last deportation of Hungarian Jews. Her trade kept her alive as she was proven useful cutting the hair of the Nazi officers in the concentration camp. Margaret was the sole survivor of her family. It was also in her hairdresser's chair, before the deportation, that she met her future husband, Moishe. They would find each other again soon after the liberation and were married in 1945. They lived in Displaced Persons camps in Germany, where they had their firstborn, followed by their arrival to Montreal in 1949. Margaret raised her son, Fred and twins, Harry and Rita, while Moishe strived and succeeded in the garment industry. Margo, as she was known by many, was an entrepreneur in her own right and opened and operated the Rockhill Deli, serving some of the best European delicacies and pastries in the west end of Montreal. A wonderful hostess to family and friends, preparing delicious meals, and delectable desserts, she came to be known for her famous "Babi's cookies". Margaret loved going to the movies, playing cards with her late husband and friends, and was an avid Casino player who held VIP privileges. A devoted and strong-willed woman, she always provided a safe and abundant home life for her family. The family extends their sincere gratitude to Margaret’s devoted and compassionate caregivers, Carmen, Hannah, Susan, Jennifer, Emily, and Amor. Special thanks to Elisheva Goldberg of Cummings Centre Homecare, and to Lorraine Smith, and Anita Ndamukong of CLSC René-Cassin for their excellent service and care. Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W., on Monday, October 3 at 11:00 a.m. Burial at the Chevra Shaas Congregation Cemetery (E16), de la Savane. Shiva at her home. Due to the onset of Yom Kippur, shiva ends Tuesday afternoon. Donations in Margaret’s memory may be made to the Montreal Holocaust Museum (514) 345-2605. |
