Obituary Chana passed away peacefully, on Tuesday, October 19, 2021, three months short of her one hundred and third birthday, after a full life lived with song, optimism, and a smile for everyone. She is predeceased by her beloved husband of sixty-three years, Israel "Ultche". Her parents, Shmuel and Freydl Pasternak, her sister Feygele, and her entire family perished in the Holocaust. She was the beloved and very proud mother and mother-in-law of three sons, Abe and Annie (Young) and Shirley z''l (Bomer), Aron and Anna (Fishman), Sam and Judy (Posternak) of Toronto. Raizel (Fishman) Candib was like her own child to Chana. Chana's love for her nine grandchildren and their spouses knew no bounds; Michael Gonshor and Jackie Herman, Josh Gonshor and Debbie Schwarcz, Sarah Miriam Gonshor z''l, Ben Gonshor, Yona Gonshor and Robert Bohbot, Frayda Gonshor and Rabbi Yonatan Cohen, Adam Gonshor, Danny Gonshor and Julia, Bram Gonshor and Robin. She was also "Bubby Chana" to Katherine "Chavele" Candib, whom Chana included in her list of grandchildren. Chana was blessed to know and enjoy the thrill of nine great-grandchildren, who were equally blessed to have her in their lives, Hoshaya, Gavriel, Amarya, Emanuel Cohen, Emma and Sophia Gonshor, Shiloh, Izzy, and Theo Gonshor. We are all grateful to Eileen Katz, Director of B'nai Brith House where Chana spent fifteen happy years, enjoying the company of her co-residents and Eileen's careful and loving attention. Chana's caregivers in the last few years, ensured her quality of life, her dignity, and our peace of mind. We cannot thank them enough for their devotion and respect with which they treated our mother and mother-in-law. Thank you, Dorrie, Flossy, Melody, Odette, Violetta. Daria, you were like a daughter to Chana and she considered you family, just as we do. Chana's last few months were spent in the Kastner Pavilion of the Jewish Eldercare Centre. We could not have asked for kinder or more caring treatment than she received from all the doctors, nurses and PAB's on the 6th floor. Our mother and mother-in-law was fortunate to have been able to spend her final months in that environment and for that we are most grateful. A private funeral will be held on Thursday, October 21, 2021. A zoom link for Shiva will be available. Donations in Chana's memory may be made to the Jewish Public Library, (514) 734-1401.
