Peacefully, after a long illness, in her eighty-ninth year, on Thursday, August 4, 2016. Born July 26, 1928. At her bedside in Montreal, Canada was her family, including sons Harvey (Gabriela) and John (Gloria). Rose was predeceased by her husband Sam (age 82) and youngest son Mitchell (age 49) (Karen Jackalin). She is survived by five grandchildren, Heather, Alexandra, Edward, Matthew and Derek. She was the daughter of Ida Steinberg and Hyman Nerenberg. Predeceased by her siblings and their spouses, Harold and Anne Nerenberg and Daniel and Helene Nerenberg. She is survived by her beloved cousins, nephews and nieces. Rose was married to Sam for fifty-three years, married June 19, 1949, until Sam's death in November 2002. Rose was born in Montreal. Rose's childhood homes were on and around City Hall Avenue, now called Hôtel-de-Ville. She spent most of her married life in Montreal and raised her three children there as well, these past sixty-seven years. She loved Montreal, and there was no other place in the world she wanted to live. Still, Rose had the travel bug, and even in her last decade, she made voyages to Israel, safaris in South Africa, trips to India, Vietnam, Russia, Greece, Italy and everywhere else that looked interesting. She made many bus trips to much closer places, like Ottawa to see the tulips, Burlington and Plattsburg. She loved them all. Rose was a great mom to her sons, and she will be dearly missed by her family, and her many friends. Rose made the world a better place for everyone. Over the past year of her life, Rose battled cancer. She was brave through the whole time, always finding time to cook, trade recipes, talk on the phone to her many friends and relatives, and organize trips as well as family reunions. Her phone was in constant demand, and it was not unusual for her to have 25 missed messages every day when she returned home. Really, this was just like every other one of her eighty-eight years! Until the last few weeks, she stored up her energy to have good family outings, and eventually, she decided to check herself into the Jewish General Hospital on her own terms. She made many new friends in her few weeks at the JGH. Rose was feisty, always alive and always ready to try something new. Rose gave her sons nearly constant backseat driving instructions, and knew every street and shortcut in the city, and still took the bus when it suited her. She made her children eat the right food, go outside and play, and encouraged every person to do what they were comfortable with. She never asked her sons to be doctors, but a Jewish mother she certainly was, always reminding her sons to call, but if they were a little lazy, she lovingly called them just the same. We, her sons and family, owe so much to you Rose. We love you for everything you were, and you will be remembered daily for the rest of our lives. Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean-Talon St. W., on Sunday, August 7 at 12:00 p.m. Burial at the Jewish Assistance Cemetery, de la Savane. Family will be receiving visitors following burial from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. only. Contributions in Rose's memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, (514) 255-5151. |
