Obituary SAUL GORDON On Wednesday, June 1, 2011, at the age of ninety-six, Saul Gordon's long and well-lived life drew to its conclusion. He will be deeply missed by those who were lucky enough to call him family or friend. His spirit and light will remain with us as shining threads woven throughout the fabric of our lives. Saul was a man who elicited a smile from everyone he met. Those who knew him loved his quick wit, mischievous nature, generosity, and common sense approach to life. He took great pleasure in making people laugh, and his humour and upbeat attitude were legendary. He had a great thirst to learn and grow, and an unquenchable interest in people. He was a passionate outdoorsman, particularly in the Laurentian mountain landscape he loved. He credited his success in life, and his many healthy years of life, to his beloved Rose, with whom he enjoyed a supportive and loving marriage of fifty-five years before her passing in 1997. Despite deeply missing his life partner every day since then, his natural and inspiring optimism allowed him to meet the challenge of maintaining his zest for life. And so he continued to enjoy life to the fullest, taking pleasure in the lives and accomplishments of his children - Barnett and Charna Gordon, and Reissa and Gerald Spier - who feel blessed to have had this extraordinary human being as a father. He delighted in his four beautiful granddaughters - Shauna and Michelle Gordon, and Devon and Deanna Spier - who were inspired by his outlook on life, his stories and his wisdom. He and Rose shared a duplex on Mountain Sights Avenue for over fifty years with his late sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Julius Rosenstein, and he enjoyed a very close and loving relationship with their children, Hannah and Mort Wolch, and Donna and Eric Rodier, and their own children and grandchildren. At his residence Castel Royale, he was known for his energetic participation in activities. As a proud veteran, he was known for organizing various local Remembrance Day ceremonies over the years. Throughout his life, he tirelessly and significantly contributed to his family, his neighbours, his communities, and his country. Saul is survived by his sister, Miriam Gruman, his sisters- and brothers-in-law, Ruth and Leon Huberman, Bea Chapman, and Roslyn and Allen Levine, and many nieces and nephews and their families. Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W., on Sunday, June 5 at 1:45 p.m. Shiva at Castel Royale, 5740 Cavendish Blvd. #211, H4W 2T8, Sunday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., Monday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Due to the festival of Shavuot, shiva ends Tuesday afternoon. Contributions in Saul's memory may be made to Canadian Magen David Adom for Israel, (514) 731-4400, or to Engineers Without Borders Canada, 1 (866) 481-3696.
