Mortimer Morty CRYER (1926 - 2020)

Morty was an industrial property developer and a family man. Morty was the son of Jacob and Rose Cryer, who he said were the best parents anyone could ever have. He loved his sister, Marjorie, dearly and they both helped their father run his haberdashery. Morty then worked in the schmatta business, where he would dance on the cutting-room tables, teasing the workers and aggravating the boss. He courted Alma Respitz at Baron Byng High, and they were inseparable for the rest of their lives. Alma's brother, Ingie became Morty's confidant, best friend and legal counsel and Alma's sister, Beverly was her best friend and confidant often baby sitting their first children, Stuart and Neil. Wendy came a bit later and rounded out the family. Morty worked day and night to provide for his family, managing and eventually owning his own haberdasheries. Alma's parents, Sam and Bella, gave Morty and Alma some respite, by picking up their grandchildren every Sunday morning at 7:30am, dropping off bags of bagels, cottage cheese and lox. Morty then took the biggest risk of his life and rejected the offer of a secure management job in the clothing business for a large in Toronto based retailer in order to develop land that his father-in-law co-owned. Morty would forever be proud that he foresaw the value of land in the dead centre of the Island of Montreal and that he managed the construction, financing and leasing of several industrial buildings, having had no capital to invest initially. Morty worked on this successful enterprise with his son, Neil and accountant, Hussain Dal, over the past several decades. Morty was an astute businessman in various businesses and was regularly sought after for consultation by accountants, bankers and other business people. Morty and Alma travelled the world in their later years, still much in love and dazzling to see on the dance floor. Then Morty became Alma's caregiver as her health declined and she broke his heart by leaving him six years before he could now finally rejoin her.

The family would like to especially thank Morty's caregivers, Adela Galanza Mojner, Jingle Gomez, and Gemma, who were exceptional and loving. The family also thanks all the staff at the Waldorf residence, and the cardiology, the oncology, and the palliative care teams of the Jewish General Hospital.
